Richard Barnfield The Rival Poet
Richard Barnfield ( no known likeness exists) (1574-1620) ,A minor poet who libelled Penelope Rich in his work The Affectionate Shepherd I strongly suspect him to be the main author of Willobie His Avisa.I believe this writer had a serious infatuation with Henry Wriothesley and wanted Wriothesley to end his patronage of Shakespeare and and to end his relationship with Penelope Rich. Barnfield wanted to be both the lover and personal poet to Henry Wriothesley. This is what motivated him to write the Ganymede tetralogy . The Ganymede tetralogy comprises of the following books , Greenes Funeralls Feb 1594 , Willobie His Avisa Sep 1594 The Affectionate Shepherd Nov 1594 and concluding with Cynthia Feb 1595 . All of these works are running a parallel narrative and all are expressing his love for a young aristocrat and his hatred and distrust of a Rival Poet ( who was William Shakespeare) Greenes Funeralls insults Shakespeare by reiterating Greenes famous insult of Shakespeare. The poem Willobie his Avisa openly libels the Old Player WS and bemoans the fact that he is the friend of the young and naive young Aristocrat H.W.. The Affectionate Shepherd libels a disgusting Old Suitor who Guendolen cannot " Shake " and who is in love uPto his EAREs - who crowns Guendolen with Garlands of Bays ( This means he is writing love poetry for her) This is an allusion to William Shakespeare , ( refer to The Garland of Bays) In Cynthia Barnfield reveals that he has been in poetic rivalry with an older honey flowing poet for the affections of Ganymede and that this rivalry had occurred in 1594 , This older poet was Shakespeare. Richard Barnfield Was The Rival Poet. of Shakespeare's sonnets.
