Theatre masks
Shakespeare the poet / playwright is shadowing the protagonists of the sonnets behind theatre masks but Shakespeare is dropping lots of clues as to their identity . Penelope Rich is given black hair but Shakespeare is punning on her surname and telling us she has black eyes. He also links her eyes to stars this is an allusion to Stella . Phillip Sidney is given his alter ego of Pamphilus and many direct quotes are taken from his Astrophil and Stella sequence. Henry Wriothesley is the fair youth who has his initials reversed.
