Artemis and Actaeon
Inside the oval portion of the title page there is a scene that depicts a hunter with a stags head and a woman bathing this is a reference to the Greek myth of Artemis and Actaeon. The hunter Actaeon stumbled across Artemis and a train of her nymphs when she was bathing. Enraged Artemis turned Actaeon into a stag. His own dogs not recognising their owner tore him to pieces. We notice the theme of danger being associated with a woman this is a theme that occurs throughout Willobie His Avisa. " To grow horns like Actaeon was an Elizabethan allusion to cuckoldry.
