Avisa signs off all of her letters with the phrase " Always the same Avisa ".
Always the same is a reference to Queen Elizabeth's personal motto Semper Eadem which translates to Always the same. This had led some researchers into thinking that Avisa was intended to represent the Queen. But this is NOT correct.
We again need to remember that the book is written in Ironia. In signing her letters this way the author is saying that Avisa is as constant and chaste as Queen Elizabeth. But this is irony what the author is REALLY implying is that Avisa ( PENELOPE ) is the queen of inchastity.
