Dr Roderigo Lopez ( on right) . A portugese Jew who was the personal physician to Queen Elizabeth also physician to Robert Devereux. The circumstances of his death remain complex. Lopez unwisely revealed to friends that he had treated Devereux for "secret diseases" widely rumoured to be syphilis. Devereux agressively persecuted Lopez for conspiring to poison the queen a charge that Elizabeth was not convinced was true. Lopez was part of the Cecils spy network and his execution in 1594 ( the same year as the publication of Willobie his Avisa) put Devereux seriously out of favour with the Cecil faction. The Caveliero in Willobie his Avisa is depicted as an agressive syphilitic military man.
